In third grade, our TGAL focuses on understanding different soil types, and how the soil type affects plants that grow and the health of our environment. Each third grade class is responsible for collecting three different soil types- sandy, clay, and loamy. Along with collection, classes are also responsible for maintaining and documenting plant life.
This project is meaningful to students because they are able to learn how soil structure, nutrient content, and water retention influence root development, plant health, and food production. When students understand how soil impacts plants, they also gain awareness of sustainable practices like composting, crop rotation, and reducing soil pollution. Learning about soil types empowers students to make environmentally responsible choices that protect ecosystems and promote long-term environmental health.
