Art
Areas of Focus
Students in art experiment with materials ranging from 2-D (pastels, pencils, markers, and paint) to 3-D (Clay, sculpture) in order to expand their range of knowledge. Students learn through the process of experimentation and problem solving, learning to embrace their mistakes rather than start over. Instead of asking the question, "is this good enough?", students are challenged to think, "what did I learn from this?".
Clay

Students learn about how to experiment with the structural integrity of clay and how to make their ideas come to life.
Painting and drawing

Students learn about color mixing, challenged with learning how much of what colors they need to create the colors they envision. Students learn how colors work together, how to create depth through shading, and how to experiment with sketching BEFORE working on their final piece.
3-D

Students experiment with sewing, crochet, sculpture, and weaving. Students learn the basics, then use this knowledge to explain how they will create a project of their choosing. Students no longer follow a step by step guide, but instead are given the tools to create.
Printmaking

Students learn about the printmaking process through stamping and gelli printing
Experimental art

In these lessons, students focus on the process over product. Students learn skills like papermaking, spray painting, creating their own pigments, and how we can use natural materials from outside to create art.
Student Impact
Art is a great pathway to choose if you love to be artistic and creative! Ms. Wilkinson is a very kind teacher and is a great help if you need it! You get to learn how to sew animals and crochet and weaving! You can also do pottery, and painting! Art has taught me to be free and be my own self. Art lets you express yourself and be unique. Ms. Wilkinson is a great teacher, always able to provide help to those struggling. I love painting and coloring. Ms. Wilkinson has inspired me to enjoy art and be myself. This pathway has definitely changed my thought on art. Student Engagement
Gelli Printing
Students in 3rd grade printed on gelli plates, experimenting with layering and organic shapes.
Painting
Students in 5th grade painted still lifes, with an emphasis on the secondary colors. Students were challenged with mixing every secondary color.
Sculpture
Students in kindergarten learned about 3-dimensional art, and created imaginary landscapes with paper strips.
Pinch Pots
Students are painting their bobbleheads. Students were challenged to create balancing bobblehead animals.
Papermaking
Kindergarten students learned about the orgins of papermaking and made their own handmade paper.
Texture
4th grade students learned about texture, and created their own texture plates from clay. They experimented with the difference between raised and carved textures.
Printmaking
Students in 4th grade experimented with printmaking through creating their own printing plates, as well as experimenting with how materials make texture around the classroom.
Line and Pattern
Kindergarten students learned about line and pattern, then created their own pattern using lines learned in class.
Weaving
5th graders learned how to weave, learning about the difference between weft and warp.
