Grade Level TGAL

This year, our second grade citizen scientists are learning all about the importance of frogs and toads in our community and communities around the world for their year-long TGAL (think local act global) project. Our students will learn all about how frogs are bioindicators of a healthy habitat, how to identify and create a healthy and thriving habitat for frogs, and how to recognize different frog calls in order to identify which frogs are present in their community.
Student Impact
This year, our second grade citizen scientists engaged in a year-long TGAL (Think Local, Act Global) project exploring the importance of frogs and toads as bioindicators of environmental health. Through hands-on research and investigation, students learned how frogs reflect the health of local ecosystems in Forsyth County and around the world. They studied habitat components, identified environmental threats, and analyzed how pollution and habitat loss affect amphibian populations. Students also developed the ability to recognize and compare frog calls to determine which species are present in their community, strengthening observation, listening, and data analysis skills. Literacy and science were deeply integrated as students researched nonfiction texts, synthesized information, and communicated their findings through writing, presentations, and 3D habitat models.
Beyond academic growth, this project cultivated genuine environmental stewardship. Students began to see the connection between human choices and habitat health, shifting from simply learning about frogs to advocating for their protection. Through designing frog-friendly habitats and proposing real-world solutions, students demonstrated both understanding and agency. Many extended their learning beyond the classroom by listening for frog calls at home and sharing their knowledge with family members. By the end of the year, our students saw themselves not just as learners, but as informed citizen scientists who understand that caring for frogs locally contributes to protecting ecosystems globally.
STEM Journal Exemplars
Pond Detectives
Students drew and labeled elements of the Whitlow Frog Pond during their first visit to the pond. They looked for and labeled the parts of the pond that are required for a healthy frog habitat.
Protecting Pond Life
This second grader drew a frog pond in their journal and carefully labeled all the things frogs need to survive. It’s amazing to see how our learning about frog habitats is helping us understand how to protect these important animals!
Ponds, Wetlands, and Water Plants
Second grade students recorded their learning about frog habitats in their STEM journals by taking notes and drawing pictures. They wrote simple sentences about where frogs live, such as ponds, wetlands, and areas with lots of plants and water. The students also drew detailed pictures of frog habitats, including lily pads, tall grasses, insects, and frogs resting near the water. As they worked, they practiced observing, writing, and illustrating what they had learned. Using their STEM journals helped the students organize their ideas and show their understanding of how frog habitats support the needs of frogs.
Collaborative Creators
Students collaborated in small groups to put their ideas together. They were encouraged to make sure that their design had all the elements frogs need to live including water, food, shelter, and then add something fun.
Student Engagement
Whitlow Frog Pond
Students are observing the Whitlow Frog Pond. In their STEM journals, they are documenting what aspects of the pond are required and beneficial for a healthy frog habitat.
Community Greenway
Students were able to participate in a family event where we went out and looked for frogs out in the community. As we walked, we listened for frog calls, looked for signs of frogs, and discussed what characteristics of the park were beneficial for a frog habitat.
Frog Habitats
Students work together to design and create a poster showing how to build a healthy frog habitat. They share ideas, draw plants and clean water, and label the things frogs need to survive. By collaborating and using their science knowledge, the students act like young scientists and engineers learning how to protect frog environments.
STEMsgiving Day Parade
Students proudly display the frog puppets and healthy frog habitat posters they designed and created for the parade. They worked together to show what frogs need to live, such as clean water, plants, and a safe environment. Through their creativity and teamwork, the students shared an important message about protecting frog habitats.
The Creek
Students and parents came to a special TGAL night. We planted seeds down by a stream close to Whitlow. Students learned about the place to plant seeds whether in the sun or in the shade. We planted these seeds to grow flowers that would attract bugs for frogs to eat.
VR Goggles
Second grade students used VR goggles to explore frog habitats in an exciting and immersive way. As they put on the goggles, the classroom transformed into wetlands, ponds, and rainforests where frogs live. The students were able to look around and see lily pads, tall grasses, and even frogs hopping nearby. This hands-on experience helped them understand where frogs live and why these environments are important for their survival. Using virtual reality made the lesson fun and engaging, helping the students feel like real scientists exploring nature.
Frog Calls
Second grade students listened to recordings of frog calls from Georgia to learn about frogs that live in their state. As they heard the different croaks, chirps, and trills, the students tried to match each sound to a specific frog species. They learned that frogs use their calls to communicate and attract mates, and that each type of frog has a unique sound. By listening carefully, the students discovered how scientists identify frogs in the wild. This activity helped them better understand the variety of native frogs in Georgia and how important their sounds are in nature.
Skin Experiment
Students observed eggs placed in food coloring to simulate frog skin and human skin. To represent frog skin, the egg was peeled. For human skin, the shell was left on the egg. Students compared what the eggs looked like after a few hours in the food coloring. This taught students about how frog skin is more sensitive and contributes to them being bioindicators for our community.
STEMgiving
Our 2nd graders had so much fun combining science, creativity, and teamwork for our school’s STEMSgiving Parade!After studying frog habitats, students designed and created their own lily pads to show where frogs live and thrive. It was a great way to bring learning to life while celebrating STEM and Thanksgiving together. We are so proud of their hard work and creativity!
Community Partners
Frog Pond
Courtney Dye came and taught 2nd graders about the frog pond and the ecosystem inside. They also learned about the different plants in the area and how they contribute to the ecosystem of our garden.
Frog Calls
Apryl Milam, from Keep Forsyth County Beautiful, visited each second grade classroom to facilitate student learning about frog calls. Students were able use different objects to try and recreate the different frog calls.
TGAL Data
Frog Pond
Students went to the frog pond with STEM journals and observed the environment. They were looking for frogs around the pond. They also looked closely at the color of the water and the plants growing nearby. As they observed, the students learned that frogs are bioindicators, which means they help scientists understand if the pond is healthy. By recording what they saw and asking questions about the frogs and their habitat, the students acted like real scientists studying the pond just outside our school!
